After witnessing Afghanistan's biggest opium season ever, counter-narcotics minister Habibullah Qaderi has resigned. He's now headed to Canada to serve as consul general. Qaderi held his cabinet post since 2004 and watched his country's poppy production grow strongly over that entire period.
Now US and Afghan officials are debating whether to use aerial spraying to know out next year's poppy crop. So far president Karzai has refused to allow it, fearing the herbicide could take out legitimate crops, livestock and contaminate water supplies.
