The next combat warplane expected to enter Canadian service is the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The JSF is expected to enter service with several nations, including Australia.
Now it appears the F-35 is going to cost even more than had been expected. The US Air Force has decided to slash its intended order of the Lockheed fighters by more than half. This has sent production costs soaring as everything from tooling to R&D costs have to be spread out of a smaller production run.
Australia now calculates it will cost $131 million ($118-m. Cdn) for each aircraft purchased. The first F-35s are due out in 2013.
