The Taliban lobbed a few rockets into Forward Operating Base Wilson while our newly-minted Defence Minister, Peter MacKay, was checking the place out. No one was hurt. MacKay was hustled into an armoured personnel carrier and then helicoptered out of the place.
Canadian Forces spinmeister, Col. Stephane Lefaut, said the attacks are a sign that the Taliban are getting desperate as coalition forces continue to restrict their movement in the region. Let's think about that. The bad guys are able to set up their primitive rockets within range of our bases completely undetected, fire them accurately enough to hit their targets, get clean away and it's all because they're desperate?
MacKay has also noted the obvious; that the civil unrest in Pakistan could result in a massive influx of Pashtuns into Kandahar. The DefMin pointed out this could provide the insurgents with new recruits and put our troops at greater risk. That makes sense. So just what are we going to do about it? Are we going to send badly needed reinforcements? No hint of that. Maybe we're going to be a little more defensive in our tactics? MacKay says that Ottawa is continuing to monitor the situation in Pakistan. That's nice.
