Strauss-Khan Freed Without Bail

The socialist former head of the IMF, Dominique Strauss-Khan, appeared in a New York court this morning where he was released from house arrest and had his $6-million bail and bond returned.

DSK's lawyer had a few choice words:

"I want to remind all of you that at each appearance in the last six weeks, we asked you and asked the world not to rush to judgement - now i think you can understand why," said Mr Strauss-Kahn's lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, after leaving the courtroom.

"We believe the next step will lead to the complete dismissal of the charges," he added.

It was disheartening to observe the number of people, including plenty of self-styled progressives, who were unhesitatingly ready to hold this guy guilty.

In France, the news has been called a "thunderbolt."

The "perp walk", the parading of the accused, the headlines such as "Chez Perv" and "Frog Legs It", were widely perceived as insulting and humiliating.

"He was thrown to the wolves," said Lionel Jospin [France's last Socialist prime minister], in his veiled criticism of the American system.

It is sad indeed so many progressives leapt to lacerate DSK. I pity the woman accuser who will now be pilloried by the rest of the world. As to DSK, his career has effectively ended and his reputation blown asunder. Julian Assange has received no better treatment over the accusations (as flimsy as they appear to be) against him.

Oh Jymn, don't prematurely predict DSK's demise. These are the French after all, the very same people who kept Jerry Lewis on life support for decades.
