Real Progress in Iraq?

In a few weeks there'll be an indication of whether Iraqi society is willing to set aside its ethnic and religious sectarian divisions.

On January 31st, Iraqis go to the polls in 14 of the country's 18 districts to elect local authorities. According to McClatchey Newspapers there seems to be an emerging trend among some Iraqis who are willing to vote for the "other guy," crossing ethnic or religious lines to elect the best candidate.

If it happens on the 31st that a clear number cast what can only be called "secular" ballots, that will be the first significant sign of progress since Saddam was toppled.

It'll be an election that's definitely worthwhile watching.
