Europe to Nix Big Screen Plasma TV?

They produce a lot of heat and use as much as 50% more electricity than flat screen LCD televisions - and that's got European regulators' attention.

The EU is expected to bring in regulations this spring putting a ceiling on the amount of electricity a television can require. Smaller plasmas will be allowed but the mega-screens now reaching the market won't.

California is about to unveil even more stringent regulations.

So when do they start regulating the number and wattage of light bulbs, maximum allowable temperature in your home, use of outdoor lighting by municipalities and homeowners, a ban on hot tubs, etc...?
Ridiculous.

Unfortunately Canajun, you're just going to have to learn to live with that. Yes, Europe has regulated light bulbs, banning the old incandescents as they're about to do in the US.

Times have changed. Slashing carbon emissions has become a priority.

If you don't want products banned outright, you had better get behind carbon taxes because, when it comes to shrinking carbon footprints, the "user pays" option is the sole alternative to outright bans.

You're going to get very frustrated, very soon if you don't come to grips with carbon taxes.

I don't have a problem with carbon taxes - never did.

I've always been aware that some of my lifestyle choices cost more - for example I pay a punitive amount for motorcycle insurance, yet I still ride.

The difference is that it is my choice, not the government's.

Just curious, what are you riding? A couple of years back I switched to the big BMW "adventure-tourer" R1200GS. Finest machine I've ever had the privilege to ride.

Right now I'm riding a H-D Dyna Low Rider. After years of Nortons it was quite a switch!

Never had a BMW though. Perhaps that's next.

Commando? 850? Years ago (don't ask how many) I had an Atlas.

Yeah, Commando. I had a few - a 71, a 72, a couple of 74s. Had an Atlas in there too somewhere ... too many to keep straight (and too long ago now)
