My husband is Turkish. He follows events in the Middle East very closely and is keenly interested in politics. He is not renowned for his sympathy for Israel. Which is why I was surprised to hear his take on the invasion of Gaza: "Hamas deserves it. Israel has tried very hard to make peace with Hamas. Hamas doesn't want peace. Hamas is getting its support from Iran, which wants to make trouble for Israel." He has since slammed Israel for the high cost in civilian lives.
