It's been 30-years since director Roman Polanski fled the United States to avoid prosecution for "unlawful intercourse" for having sodomized a young girl. In 1977, Polanski admitted having had sex with the then 13-year old girl and pleaded guilty of the charge but then fled before sentencing.
Now he's seeking to have his conviction overturned "in the interests of justice." Apparently court officials angered Polanski and showed bias against him by insisting that Polanski appear in court if he wanted to argue that the charges be thrown out. Of course, Polanski would have to be brought to court in a prison van if he dared set foot again in the United States.

What is a canal horse?
Ah, I wondered whether the reference was too obscrue. Way back when, horses were used to tow heavily laden barges up some canals. The horses often had to walk perilously close to the canal edge which meant only those with the greatest nerve were cut out for the job.
In Polansky's case, however, his nerve isn't courage but outrageous audacity. Free me first, then I'll come back. If you don't, you're biased! What a chump.

Polanski is an arrogant a-hole & always has been.
My understanding of the term was that since there wasonly a tow path on one side of the canal, a canal horse with nerve would not give way to another horse coming from the opposite direction.

I grew up near where tohe old Erie canal used to run and it was a common expression among the older people who also grew up in that area (near Albany, NY). They used the tern to describe people who were expecially pushy.
