The prime minister of Greece warns his country is on the verge of becoming the next Wiemar Republic. Antonis Samaras is appealing for funds to fend off the outright collapse of Greek society.
"Greek democracy stands before what is perhaps its greatest
challenge," Samaras told the German business daily Handelsblatt in an
interview published hours before the announcement in Berlin that Angela
Merkel will fly to Athens next week for the first time since the
outbreak of the crisis.
Resorting to highly unusual language for a
man who weighs his words carefully, the 61-year-old politician evoked
the rise of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party to highlight the threat that
Greece faces, explaining that society "is threatened by growing
unemployment, as happened to Germany at the end of the Weimar Republic".
"Citizens know that this government is Greece's last chance," said Samaras.

What a pile of bull Samaras is spouting. The Golden Dawn party ain't as big as neo-Nazi parties in various other European countries, such as Austria or arguably even France (depending what you consider the Le Pens). More to the point, if Samaras goes down what takes over won't be Golden Dawn, it'll be Syriza, the official opposition in striking distance of forming a government if they poll just a bit higher in the next election.
And Syriza are an excellent progressive party, much better than the worthless duds in power right now.
If it was a scam it didn't have much effect on the Iron Chancellor, Merkel.
