Climate Change Update - Mexico Hunkers Down

Southern Mexico is bracing for what could be the strongest ever hurricane in that nation's history.

Hurricane Patricia is bearing down on the Mexican coast, having reached a maxed out Category 5 over the past 12-hours. Maximum sustained winds have reached 200 mph/320 km/h. That's more than enough to rip the place apart.

The interior minister, Miguel Ángel Osorio, told Mexico’s Radio Formula on Friday morning that officials are especially worried about the safety of people in the Puerto Vallarta, in Jalisco state, and in the nearby community of Bahía de Banderas, in Nayarit state.

“We need people to understand the magnitude of the hurricane, it is a devastating hurricane, the biggest one ever registered.”

In fact the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the western hemisphere. Saffir-Simpson may need an upgrade in coming years.

Anyong said: I am worried about my friends who live there. The hurricane they had last year while there, was bad enough.

Anyong - if where they live is Manzanillo they'd better be well inland and at higher elevation in strong shelter when this hits. 200mph winds and a 30 foot surge will devastate the place.

Thanks for the helpful links, Dana. They're in for it. The fragile infrastructure and poor construction standards greatly compound the damaging effects of a hurricane such as Patricia.

@ Anyong - is this the area where your friends are situated? It appears the track of the hurricane means it will clear north and central Mexico.

You're welcome. I became a bit of a hurricane geek during Katrina. Not that I'm all that knowledgeable myself but I know where to find the knowledgeable people.

Now the strongest hurricane anywhere on earth in recorded history according to CNN. And it really does appear that it'll make landfall at Cat 5.
