NATO countries may have had their fill of their soldiers being murdered by Afghan soldiers. While most ISAF forces are scheduled to leave in 2014, NATO Sec-Gen, Anders Rasmussen, says the spate of "Green on Blue" killings could speed up their departure.
"From now until the end of 2014 we will see announcements of
redeployments, withdrawals or drawdown … If the security situation
allows, I would not exclude the possibility that in certain areas you
could accelerate the process."
Rasmussen admitted that the
killings of almost 50 allied troops this year in "green on blue" attacks
– Afghan security forces turning on their trainers and mentors – had
damaged the relationship between the international forces and the Afghan
police and military.
"There's no doubt insider attacks have undermined trust and confidence, absolutely," he said.
Amid argument among
analysts as to what has been behind the stream of "green on blue"
attacks, Nato officers on the ground are reported to have ascribed them
mainly to disgruntled and embittered Afghan security forces with grudges
against their western mentors.
Our military leaders have worked tirelessly to spread the notion that these killings are the work of Taliban infiltrators but, then again, they've had a decade to perfect recipes for bullshit to feed the public at home.
Chris, a.k.a. "CRF", has provided a link to a recent study in which American and Afghan soldiers revealed the utterly dysfunctional relationship that exists between them and essentially dooms our "mission" in their country. This has simply gone on for far too long. This well is poisoned.
