Rolling Stone Outs John McCain

Like most of us, my knowledge of John McCain has been largely that of his common narrative. It's John the hero, fighter jock, POW who resisted torture at the hands of his Vietnamese captors and refused early repatriation, a man unlike other men.

It's a great story and one that seems to have become common knowledge. Now I'm no longer sure it's true.

Rolling Stone magazine, in an article entitled "Make Believe Maverick" says there's an awful lot less and a worrisome bit more to John McCain than meets the eye:

At one level I don't want to believe it and yet McCain has shown his cynical, manipulative and dishonest side so often this past year I believe it could all be true.

It's all true. What's interesting is what they left out.

McCain is not a hero. He refused to read the manuals for the planes he flew. The only reason he was captured is because he hadn't read the manual telling him where the eject lever was and thus, went down with his plane. If he had used the eject lever, he likely would never have been captured at all. I read that somewhere and can't recall where but it was a mainstream news item in the USA.

So McCain is nothing but a fraud. He slept around. He had really bad grades. He coasted through life on his father's name and standing, failing upwards all the way. There is no honour in that man. He's a tyrant, a bully, a user, and a creep of the highest order.

I'm pretty sure McCain did eject, Carrie. The handles on an ejection seat are mighty hard to miss and I find it inconceivable he wouldn't know exactly where they were when flying into combat. The idea of him going down with his plane is hard to imagine. Fighter jets don't do well on crash landings nor does anyone aboard one of them.

You're right about his boozing, philandering ways. Appparently he was only following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather on those scores. That didn't stop any of them from rising to the top.

A fraud? Yeah, probably. How else to explain his wholesale transformation from the moderate centrist of 2000 to the uber-right wingnut of 2008?

I think there have been three times so far where he's contradicted himself on an issue within the span of 24-hours.

Thanks Carrie.

There's no question he's scary. Obama is right, the guy is "erratic" as in unstable, indecisive, angry and confused. That he's decided to troll the pitbull barbie in his wake doesn't improve things one bit either.
