I'm Sure There's a Good Answer but What?

Okay, D-Day celebrations to commemorate the Normandy landings in 1944. The last tranche of veterans on hand for the 75th commemoration, bless them all.

What I don't get is the date. Today is the 5th of June. D-Day, and I have this on good authority, was the 6th of June. That's tomorrow.

So what gives?

The ships left from Portsmouth on June 5th. That's where today's "celebrations" are being held.

Tomorrow, June 6th, everyone will be on the beaches at Normandy.

Ah, thank you. My dad was at Dieppe and I've walked that stony beach. Normandy is much better especially for the old'uns.
