If you want to enjoy sunrise in Tiananmen Square the Chinese government is there to help. On this massive screen they're televising what you can't see for the intense blanket of smog - the sun rising. Hard to tell if that's supposed to pick you up or just make you feel really, really bummed.

Such a dramatic change in less than 15 years. When I was in Beijing in 1990, there was no smog problem. There were hardly any cars on the roads and streets - lots of bicycles and public transit (subway and buses).
