They're comparing Ted Cruz to Monty Python's "Black Knight." The nomination battle may be lost but Cruz loyalists want to wage a social conservative policy fight on the convention floor.
Convention delegates loyal to Cruz are being urged to attend the party knees-up in Cleveland Ohio in July, not so much to block the formal endorsement of Trump, so much as to mount an effort to nobble Trump by stuffing a lot of very conservative and evangelical stuff into the party platform – as though Trump would feel himself to be bound by such stuff.
The Cruz grassroots campaign in the course of the primaries was deft at ensuring that even in states that Trump won, a good number of those who were elected or appointed as convention delegates were loyal to the Texan senator. Cruz supporter and former Virginia state attorney general Ken Cuccinelli emailed them on Sunday, arguing that it was still possible 'to advance a conservative agenda at the convention'. Cuccinelli invited them to join a phone conference call this week, to plot a convention strategy to protect against liberal changes to the party policy.
Interviewed by The New York Times, Cuccinelli singled out abortion and transgender bathroom access, saying: "This is about protecting the movement's conservatism".
Donald, come back here and take what's coming to ya!!
