A Terrorist Attack on the Washington Navy Yard?

There are reports that up to three gunmen might be involved in an attack at the Washington Navy Yard, the U.S. Navy's oldest shore installation.

The mayor of Washington says there have already been a dozen deaths including one gunman.  Authorities believe there were likely two, possibly three gunmen involved in the attack.

I always thought there was some kind of disconnect between the threat of Al Queda and reality. Remember the two guys hiding in the trunk and shooting through the tailights. Well if Al Queda was real how hard would it be to send thousands through Mexico and paralyze America, maybe I was prescient.

It does not look these were terrorists. One of the shooter who was killed was identified as Aaron Alexis. A local guy and recently hired as contractor. Other two are not identified.

I suppose it depends on your definition of "terrorist", LD. Was Timothy McVeigh not a terrorist? If it was one shooter, it might be just another Sandy Hook, crazed-killer situation. If it was two or three that creates a different dimension.

@ Steve. Just about any city in North America remains extremely vulnerable to sophisticated terrorists. Most cities have chemical tank farms within reasonable proximity to heavily populated areas. A 60 Minutes piece a few years ago showed how a standard RPG round fired from a minivan atop an overpass at the right tank could release a lethal cloud that could sweep straight through population zones and potentially kill scores if not hundreds of thousands.

Mound, I suppose terrorists is associated with Muslims in U.S. It makes lives of American Muslims difficult. Police was specifically asked and they said that they did not think so. One shooter is dead and the other one is at large.

I should add that privately owned drones are very worrisome. How you distinguish between the one used for hunting and the other for killing people?

Seems the guy was a Buddhist. I guess the Americans better start rounding up Buddhists now.

Actually, PLG, I've been surprised lately at outbreaks of Buddhist violence in Asia.

Please don't make the Buddhists target for Americans. His father says that he was traumatized when he did rescuing during 9/11. Story says that he was not Buddhist - he studied Buddhism early in life.

Mound is right about violence in Asia by Buddhist but they mostly kill themselves.

LeDaro, you realize I was being sarcastic, right?

MoS--Well, Asians can have wars and insurrections like anyone else; if lots of them happen to be Buddhists you're going to have violence with and by Buddhists.
I think lots of the Thai and folk in Myanmar that are busy suppressing some of their respective minority groups, are Buddhist. And no doubt part of the excuse they're using is that the folks they're suppressing aren't.
