For Once It Sucks to Live on the West Coast

Getting up at 4 a.m. to watch a hockey game.  Well more than just a hockey game.  It was worth it.  And now a message to the flat-packers who earned silver:

Three goals against in the entire tournament.

Like someone once said offense wins game, defence wins championships.

Yup. Now the part I can't bear - the triumphalism that will blare, seemingly non-stop, on CBC for the rest of the day.

It needs to be celebrated. We defeated U.S to reach the final. Well-done team Canada.

I'm not a hockey fan but will take some of it in during the Olympics and for me, the come from behind victory of the Canadian women's team was far more impressive.

However, my Olympic hockey hero is the young Latvian goalie. His performance under such duress was stunning.

From the land of deep, pervasive cold to the land of the mild and moderate: Mound, you have my deepest sympathies for your temporal travails. ;)

I guess we can be thankful that the downtown Vancouver "hockey riot" has been averted!

Yeah, BY, I fell the same way. That womens final stands as one of the most extraordinary team efforts of any sport I've ever watched, not just hockey.

I loved the note to the men from "the girls".

And Stevie Y must have had some confusing moments watching that Latvian goalie - the kid's under contract to Stevie's team in Tampa Bay and plays in the farm system. :-)

I agree with Ray. I felt genuine relief to learn that the yahoos hadn't flooded the streets of Vancouver. Maybe because it's our national team and, gasp, it's snowing. Vancouverites might be in fear of those little white creatures falling from the sky.

I'm also with Dana and BY. Yes, the 3-0 romp to the gold was dandy but it didn't match the women's 3rd period/OT comeback from a 2-0 deficit in the third of their gold final.

Lorne, it appears there were a lot of Lotus Eaters who got up for the game including, according to CBC, all 300-residents of Carey Price's village. I don't know if you could get that many BC'ers out of bed at that hour for a tsunami.

LD, have some sympathy for our American cousins. The drubbing they had to endure at the hands of the Finns in the bronze medal game was brutal.

Beijing York, you're right. Women hockey team was amazing. Another gold for Canada.

Mound, you're right. Poor Americans could not win bronze even. My sympathies. ;)

That women's game was incredible.

The Latvian goalie was truly excellent, but I have to say the Latvians themselves played pretty well. I mean, towards the end they were running out of steam, but the rest of the time . . . dunno how to put it. The Canadians got a lot of shots, but the Latvian defence was hanging tough enough that a lot of them weren't dangerous shots, you know what I mean? They were outgunned, and they knew it, but they played hard, played pretty canny, and never gave up.

The Latvians were trying to play the same kind of game that the Canadians were playing but without the talent, skill and depth.

If that turns out to be the last time the NHL lets it's players compete the Olympics might as well do away with men's hockey. I'm quite serious.

The competition in all the rest of the events is so intense and the talent so world class that a hockey tournament of "amateurs" would be a humiliating embarrassment.
