The United States has a long long way to go on this issue. People who by their standards call themselves "progressive" continue to defend this barbarism even in the face of condemnation by more enlightened nations, and in the face of overwhelming evidence that it is ineffective. Americans are a violent and bloodthirsty lot, and they seem to revel in it.
