Abbas is suffering from illusion. Does he really expect that NATO will be impartial? I have my serious doubts. I don't think western nations really want a fair and peaceful resolution of Israeli and Palestinian conflict. They have always stood on the side of Israel.
A while ago there was a news item that "Arnon Milchan was the first one who provided the necessary material to Israel to make its first atomic bomb." He is a Hollywood film-maker and news item was written in a celebrative way as if he was a hero. Why did west not protest? So much for their impartiality. According to Jimmy Carter Israel has over 200 nuclear warheads. Why there is a complete silence when it comes to Israel? No other nation in the Middle East is allowed to even refine plutonium for nuclear power production.
Abbas has always suffered from illusion. But those with fewer illusions have also made little progress; the other side just have too many advantages, and clear sight only goes so far in countering them.
The Palestinians may be hooped until the oil runs out or we switch to renewables and the oil becomes irrelevant. When that happens, the US and EU won't care what happens in the Middle East and won't feel the need to pump billions of dollars and masses of political effort into backing their "unsinkable aircraft carrier".
Or if the US economy implodes and their military and economic grasp shrinks drastically, the Palestinians (and the Hondurans and Colombians for instance, various African countries, the Afghans and Yemeni and . . .) might see some light at the end of the tunnel.
