How Far Can They Be Pushed?

A Decima Research poll shows the environment is the top issue of concern to Canadians and its importance is growing.

Among Tory respondents, health care narrowly won but, even there, the Harper government was seen as having done a poor job on environmental issues.

Overall, 74 per cent of the respondents polled by Decima said the government was doing a poor job on the environment.

If he's not to pay for this in the next election, Stephen Harper is going to have to make real progress on greenhouse gas emissions, especially CO2 and methane. That means pushing hard on both Alberta and Ontario and it's anything but clear he's willing to do that. The Athabasca Tar Sands (no, they're not "oil sands") need to be cleaned up, not only as to greenhouse gases but also in regard to land and water use and pollution issues.

My guess is that Harper, in appointing Baird his enviromin, isn't planning to do much of substance. Look for a lot of hot air and vague policies that won't amount to much if the Harpies survive the next election.
