China Scores Again - This Time in Chad
China has scored another coup in Africa, this time bringing Chad under Chinese influence.
China has signed a deal to supply about $80-million in low-interest loans, debt relief and economic co-operation agreements with Chad which, as part of the deal, severed its ties with Taiwan. This deal is the latest in a series of Chinese moves to secure access to Africa's vast reserves of minerals and oil needed to fuel China's industrialization.
Another aspect of the deal features China's role as mediator to ease tensions between Chad and another Chinese client state, the Sudan. Playing a role resembling that of a Cold War superpower, China has said it will intervene to ensure stable relations between Chad and Sudan.
