It's hard not to feel pity for Myriam Bedard and her strange odyssey in recent years with her partner, Nima Mazhari.
A dozen years back Bedard won two, Olympic gold medals competing for Canada. That, sadly, was the zenith of her life. Since then she's been swamped in controversy sparked by some pretty bizarre behaviour.
The 37-year old is being returned to Quebec today to face charges of child abduction. Bedard surrendered to police in the US prior to Christmas on learning a warrant had been issued for her arrest.
Keeping (or perhaps "creeping") true to form, Bedard is lacing these latest events with a fresh battery of just plain weird allegations. She claims she was left to languish in a Maryland cell by the Canadian government to punish her for her testimony in the sponsorship scandal. Her lawyer says she believes it's pure retaliation.
Her lawyers also contend that a minor car accident last week involving Mazhari might have been staged by the Canadian government to somehow affect Bedard's court case.
Perhaps the best bit of bizarro was Bedard's claim that it was her boyfriend, Mazhari, who talked Chretien into staying out of the Iraq war.
I realize Bedard is upset it's taken a couple of weeks to return her to Canada but what I don't understand is why the aliens just didn't beam her home directly.
