GOP Uber-Bigot Virgil Goode, Representative of the vilest segment of the Republican Party in the US House of Representatives, flew into an absolute tizzy when he raged against US immigration policy as likely the path to more Muslims, like Representative-elect Keith Ellison, entering Congress. Virg claimed to be particularly incensed at the notion that Ellision might be sworn into office on a Koran rather than a bible.
Here's some news for Representative Goode: sure there's a Muslim coming in but he'll be joined by two Buddhists!
The New York Times asked the two freshmen Buddhists for their take on the controversy:
"Representative-elect Hank Johnson, a Georgia Democrat who ousted Representative Cynthia McKinney in the Democratic primary, became a Buddhist decades ago, though his family does not share that faith. A spokesperson said that Mr. Johnson plans to use a Bible, citing tradition.
"Besides, there is no book in Buddhism that’s equivalent to the Bible or the Koran, said Representative-elect Mazie Hirono, a Hawaii Democrat. She said she probably would not use any book, but that in the past, when she was sworn in as lieutenant governor, she used a friend’s family Bible."
The NYT also pointed out something that idiot Goode seems to have forgotten, congressmen aren't sworn in on a Bible, a Koran or even a phonebook. " Mr. Ellison is not swearing in on the Koran. And no incoming members of Congress swear in on the Bible. Everyone is sworn in together during a private ceremony without any religious text. It’s only during a ceremonial photo-op that a book may be brought out."
Virgil Goode, moron and bigot in the finest Republican tradition.
