Gearing Up For A Fight
His name is Fred F. Fielding and he's George Bush's choice to succeed Harriet Miers as White House counsel.
With the loss of Congress to the Democrats, Miers' departure was inevitable. She's not a scrapper and Bush will need just that to defend himself from senate and house investigations that the Dems will be launching into everything from the chicanery that led to the Iraq war to the excesses of Haliburton and other Republican favourites in Iraq and after hurricane Katrina.
The Democrats know what they're after and they've got subpoena power to summon witnesses and require the production of documents, the very things that directly threaten the most secretive and evasive, if not outright deceitful, administration in recent memory.
Fielding is a veteran who has previously served the Nixon and Reagan administrations.
