Now Tell Us What Can Be Done, Steve

Stephen Harper has already given us a number of signs as to what the global warming issue means to the Conservatives. He began by letting Rona sit on her ass doing nothing for a full year. Then he replaced her with an angry loudmouth to turn global warming into a partisanship game in the Commons.

As for Mr. "so-called greenhouse gases" himself? What we're getting out of Stevie is a bagful of empty excuses. "No quick fix", the typical can't be done line. Not much he can do because, after all, he can't ask us not to heat our houses one third of the time. There, that should put an end to it. Steve, there's plenty you can do without worrying about how we'll heat our houses.

So, what are the Harpies doing? It seems they would rather expend their energies blaming the Liberal government for inactivity on Kyoto. At least the Tories aren't doing nothing, they're perfectly busy using their time to deflect blame. There, now don't you feel a little more secure?

Harper is furiously spreading the nonsense that the Liberals weren't doing anything to meet the Kyoto protocol targets. The Liberals had launched several initiatives and did have a genuine greenhouse gas plan that the Tories could have adopted, perhaps even strengthened.

Why won't Harper take concrete steps right now? It's not because his ministries can't give him plenty of good ideas. It's because we would have to address the real causes of global warming and because Harper knows that the voters will be reluctant to do their bit until the government makes industrial polluters clean up their act first. He just can't bring himself to put his sights on that target.

What's wrong with expecting those who are making profits out of polluting to be the first to go green? Nothing at all, unless you're Stephen Harper.

What do you mean by this exactly? By far the worst GHG polluters are the coal/fossil fired power stations in this country. Power companies make up the top 5 of all emmitters led by Ontario Power. When you talk about those making profits, are you referring to these power companies or companies that use a lot of electricity like big city offices that make profits using computers, etc.

You're absolutely right. Yes the power utilities and fossil fuel sectors should be first in line because, if they're not, you'll have a much harder time persuading the citizenry that they have to make the necessary sacrifices. As I've written before, this effort is going to have to be borne by every level of our society but you'll never get Canadians to take the pain unless they see industry doing its bit first.

Yes the coal and gas fired plants are dirty and do not make considerable profit. However...who sells all that coal and gas to be burned? That racket is highly profitable and in control of a powerful lobby.
